Monday, January 15: Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Monday, January 15: Martin Luther King Jr. Day

As Pope Francis writes, “Dr. King’s dream of harmony and equality for all people, attained through nonviolent and peaceful means, remains ever timely. ‘Each one of us is called to be an artisan of peace, by uniting and not dividing, by extinguishing hatred and not holding on to it, by opening paths of dialogue’ (Fratelli Tutti, 284). In this way we will be able to see ourselves, not as ‘others’, but as neighbors, in the truth of our shared dignity as children of Almighty God. Only by striving daily to put this vision into practice can we work together to create a community built upon justice and fraternal love.”

Please Note: The St. John-St. Paul Collaborative Offices will be closed on Monday, January 15th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

God Calls… Are We Listening?

God Calls… Are We Listening?

In this Sunday’s readings, we hear two stories of call – God’s call of Samuel and Jesus’ calling of the first disciples. In both stories (as in our own lives), it is God who takes the initiative to call, inviting those who hear to respond.

“What are you looking for?” Jesus asks the disciples of John the Baptist. Their response is to follow Jesus and, ultimately, to invite others to do the same. When Andrew brings his brother Simon Peter to Jesus, Christ calls him by name. So too with Samuel, who is awakened by the call. “Here I am” he responds to Eli, who soon realizes that it is God who is calling…

An Exciting Update on “City of Goodness” in Ukraine!

An Exciting Update on “City of Goodness” in Ukraine!

As you know, our 2023 Collaborative Lenten Gift Collection was for the benefit of Misto Dobra (“City of Goodness”) in Ukraine, which provides a home for displaced mothers and children (and their pets!), including victims of domestic violence and those who, due to poverty, face the threat of having their children removed and placed in orphanages. Since the invasion almost 2 years ago, it has also served hundreds of women and children displaced by the war, as well as children orphaned by the violence. City of Goodness provides protection, medical care, psychological support, social rehabilitation, and love.

We learned that City of Goodness was working on a new project – a facility to provide medical care and rehabilitation for medically fragile children. In early summer, our Lenten Gift of $37,678 was presented to Ukraine Forward to disperse to City of Goodness for this effort. In October, we were excited to learn that the project was nearing completion…

This Sunday, January 7 is the First Sunday of the Month – Family Mass and Youth Mass are at St. John!

This Sunday, January 7 is the First Sunday of the Month – Family Mass and Youth Mass are at St. John!

Just a reminder that this Sunday, January 7 is the first Sunday of the month, and that means that the Sunday 9:00am Family Mass and 5:00pm Youth Mass will be celebrated at St. John Church.

Yes, we were at St. John last Sunday too, but that’s because December had three Sundays and we’re at St. John on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays of the month.  And yes, it’s a little confusing, but luckily it doesn’t happen too often!
