(Apologies again for the late post – things are heating up here, literally and figuratively!)

Thursday was probably the most exhilarating and challenging day of the pilgrimage so far.

In the morning after breakfast we prepared ourselves for Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation with an Examination of Conscience. Then it was back to the metro – which we’ve really mastered – to head down to the Church of St. Nicholas in the old town area. Needless to say, spirits were high!

We even stretched our wings musically with some subway Elvis-

One of the true gifts of WYD are the amazing connections with pilgrims from other countries – no matter how brief!

Walking through the streets is always filled with encounter! And we are continually amazed by the beauty of the churches and liturgies.

After lunch it was time for the Welcome Ceremony with Pope Francis – and that’s when the challenges began. It’s hard to accurately convey the size and scope and crush of the crowds – but I can say that I pocket-dialed Fr. Jim twice without touching my phone!

When we were finally able to emerge from the scrum, we took a little time nearby to catch our breath and regroup.  The kids also showed their appreciation for their chaperones – or at least one of them!

As much as I would like to be able to say we took the picture below, we can’t 🙂 But the joy and excitement of being in such close proximity to Papa Francesco was infectious!
