We learned this morning of a PHISHING/SPAM email being sent from a staff member’s email address to members of our community. Further investigation has shown that the original fraudulent email was sent from a parishioner’s email address to the SJSP Collaborative staff, so these malicious emails are likely spreading widely in our community. Please be very suspicious of any “party invitation” emails you receive, even from people known to you. Do not click on any links and contact the person directly to determine whether the email is legitimate or not.
These are the steps you should take if you receive an email like this:
- If you opened the email, clicked the link, and entered your own email credentials to view the message, you should immediately change your email password. (It is best to change your password twice – DO NOT reuse an old password! Strongly consider turning on 2-factor/multifactor authentication on your email account.)
- If you opened the email but did not click any links, mark the message as phishing/spam or simply delete the email. (Even though you did not enter your credentials, it is recommended that you change your password as an additional layer of protection.)
- If you received the email but did not open it, delete it without opening.
